In such a changing, complex society formerly simple solutions to informational needs become complicated. Many of life’s problems which were solved by asking family members, friends or colleagues are beyond the capability of the extended family to resolve. Where to turn for expert information and how to determine which expert advice to accept are questions facing many people today.
In addition to this, there is the growing mobility of people since World War Ⅱ. As families move away from their stable community, their friends of many years, their extended family relationships, the informal flow of information is cut off, and with it the confidence that information will be available when needed and will be trustworthy and reliable. The almost unconscious flow of information about the simplest aspects of living can be cut off. Thus, things once learned subconsciously through the casual communications of the extended family must be consciously learned.
Adding to societal changes today is an enormous stockpile of information. The individual now has more information available than any generation, and the task of finding that one piece of information relevant to his or her specific problem is complicated, time-consuming and sometimes even overwhelming.
Coupled with the growing quantity of information is the development of technologies which enable the storage and delivery of more information with greater speed to more locations than has ever been possible before. Computer technology makes it possible to store vast amounts of data in machine-readable files, and to program computers to locate specific information.
Telecommunications developments enable the sending of messages via television, radio, and very shortly, electronic mail to bombard people with multitudes of messages. Satellites have extended the power of communications to report events at the instant of occurrence. Expertise can be shared world wide through teleconferencing, and problems in dispute can be settled without the participants leaving their homes and, or jobs to travel to a distant conference site. Technology has facilitated the sharing of information and the storage and delivery of information, thus making more information available to more people.
In the world of change and complexity, the need for information is of greatest importance. Those people who have accurate, reliable up-to-date information to solve the day-to-day problem, the critical problem of their business, social and family life, will survive and succeed. “Knowledge is power” may well be the truest saying and access to information may be the most critical requirement of all people.
1

B.
they have difficulty securing the needed information
C.
they lack the confidence of obtaining reliable information
D.
they don't know how to communicate with others now
A
B
C
D
2

A.
solve our problems by turning to far-away experts
B.
communicate with each other unconsciously
C.
believe that reliable information would be available when needed
D.
find the information we needed within a short time
A
B
C
D
3
What happens when we are available with more information than ever before?
A.
It is more convenient for us to learn about things consciously.
B.
It causes the modem technology to develop faster than ever.
C.
We don’t have to turn to experts for advice for solving our problems.
D.
It still takes us much time to locate the accurate information we need.
A
B
C
D
D中的takes us much time对应原文该句的time-consuming,故D 正确。
4

people will spend less time holding meetings through teleconference
C.
it will be impossible for people to keep their secrets with the development of technology
D.
electronic mail will soon become a major way of sending messages
A
B
C
D
A错在solely through satellites,在原文中用的是extended“扩展”一词;B、C原文未提及。
5
The author may most probably suggest that, in order to be successful, we should ____.
A.
acquire accurate information efficiently
B.
obtain as much knowledge as we can
C.
make the best use of the modern technology
D.
go back to the society in which things were learned subconsciously
A
B
C
D
A
Those people... will survive and succeed, who引导的定语从句回答了获得成功的条件,是本题答案所在。
A blind baby is doubly handicapped. Not only is it unable to see, but because it cannot receive the visual stimulus from its environment that a sighted child does, it is likely to be slow in intellectual development. Now the ten-month old son of Dr. and Mrs. Dennis Daughters is the subject of an unusual psychological experiment designed to prevent a lag in the learning process. With the aid of a sonar-type electronic device that he wears on his head, infant Dennis is learning to identify the people and objects in the world around him by means of echoes.
The device is a refinement of the “Sonicguide”, an instrument produced by Telesensory Systems, Inc., of Palo Alto, Calif., and used by blind adults in addition to a sane or guide dog. As adapted for Dennis, it consists of a battery-powered system about the size of a half dollar that is on a headgear. A transmitter emits an ultrasonic pulse that creates an 80 degree cone of sound at 6 feet. Echoes from objects within the cone are perceived as sounds that vary in pitch and volume with the size and distance of the object. The closer an object is, the lower the pitch, and the larger the object, the louder the signal. Hard surfaces produce a sharp ping, while soft ones send back signals with a slightly fuzzy quality. An object slightly to the right of Dennis sends back a louder sound to his right ear than to the left. Thus, by simply moving his head right and left and up and down, he can not only locate an object but also get some notion of its shape and size, thanks to the varying qualities of sounds reaching his ears as the cone of ultrasound passes its edges. Dennis likes to use the device to play a kind of peek-a-boo with his mother. Standing on her knee and facing her directly, he receives a strong signal in both ears. By turning his head away, he makes her seem to disappear. “From the first time he wore it,” says Mrs. Daughters, “it was like a light going on in his head.”
What remains to be determined is how well the device will help Dennis cope with his surroundings as he begins to walk and venture further into his environment. Meanwhile, Telesensory, Inc. is working on the development of sonar device with somewhat the same sensitivity as Dennis's for use by school-age children.
6
The research involving infant Dennis is directed to______.
A.
helping the blind to see and learn as well as others
B.
facilitating the learning process of blind children
C.
solving blind children’s psychological problems
D.
finding out how children develop intellectually
A
B
C
D
首段第3句末的不定式to prevent a lag in the learning process表明了实验目的,另外,文章一开头就提到了本文讨论重点是针对blind children, B为本题答案。
7
Infant Dennis becomes the subject of the experiment most probably because ______.
A.
he already lags behind the sighted children
B.
he leads a life as normal as any other children
C.
he is at the early stage of the learning process
D.
he has the aid of a sonar-type electronic device
A
B
C
D
8
What can we learn about infant Dennis’ device?
A.
Its prototype was designed for blind adults.
B.
Its battery is as small as a half-dollar coin.
C.
It is functionally similar to a sane and guide dog.
D.
It has been improved by Telesensory Systems, Inc.
A
B
C
D
A
第2段第2句表明the size of a half dollar是包含电池在内的整个声纳定位仪的尺寸,B不正确;C没有原文依据;末段末句中的is working on表明对Dennis的声纳定位仪的改良还在进行当中,因此D不正确。
9
“its edges” (Line 11, Para. 2)refers to ______.
A.
the edge of an object
B.
the edge of the device
C.
the boundary of Dennis’ movement
D.
the boundary of the sound pitch
A
B
C
D
A
10
What is Telesensory Systems, Inc. most likely to think about infant Dennis’ device?
A.
It had better be used by blind children from school age.
B.
It needs improving for use in a complicated environment.
C.
It may not be so suitable for the blind adults.
D.
It benefits blind children in terms of learning.
A
B
C
D
