Someday a stranger will read your e-mail without your permission or scan the websites you've visited. Or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cell phone bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits.
In fact, it's likely some of these things have already happened to you. Who would watch you without your permission? It might be a spouse, a girlfriend, a marketing company, a boss, a cop or a criminal. Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you never intended to be seen—the 21st century equivalent of being caught naked.
Psychologists tell us boundaries are healthy, that it's important to reveal yourself to friends, family and lovers in stages, at appropriate times. But few boundaries remain. The digital bread crumbs (碎屑) you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to reconstruct who you are, where you are and what you like. In some cases, a simple Google search can reveal what you think. Like it or not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret.
The key question is: Does that matter?
For many Americans, the answer apparently is "no".
When opinion polls ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it. A survey found an overwhelming pessimism about privacy, with 60 percent of respondents saying they feel their privacy is "slipping away, and that bothers me. "
But people say one thing and do another. Only a tiny fraction of Americans change any behaviors in an effort to preserve their privacy. Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths (收费站) to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that can track automobile movements. And few turn down supermarket loyalty cards. Privacy economist Alessandro Acquisti has run a series of tests that reveal people will surrender personal information like Social Security numbers just to get their hands on a pitiful 50-cents-off coupon (优惠券),
But privacy does matter—at least sometimes. It's like health; when you have it, you don't notice it. Only when it's gone do you wish you'd done more to protect it.

Valentine's Day is supposed to be about love and romance. But unfortunately, it can be just the opposite. Because of that, Feb. 15 starts the busy season for divorce lawyers, as people who were unhappy with their marriages heading into the day often decide that they no longer want to be with the one they used to love.
A study of divorce filings (案件) in New York, Illinois and California by AttorneyFee.com, a legal referral (推荐)site, found that February is the busiest month of the year for divorce filings, up about 18% from the average month. And those seeking referrals for a divorce lawyer on the site increase 38% following the holiday, with the biggest spike (峰值) on the day after Valentine's.
Another legal site, Avvo.com, reports a 40% increase in those seeking information and advice about divorce in the period right after Valentine's Day.
"There's a very large number of people who are considering the divorce all the time, deciding whether or not to file," said Richard Komaiko, a co-founder of Attorney Fee. "On Valentine's Day, they take stock of things. "
Komaiko said February has factors other than the holiday that could lead to an increase in divorces. January is the busiest month of the year for bankruptcy filings, highlighting the financial problems that often divide couples. In addition, the cold weather of February can keep couples that are having trouble indoors and closer to each other, adding to problems.
But Alton Abramowitz, president of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, believes the holiday itself often brings things to a head for couples who are having trouble. "There's always the clients who come in a day or two after saying ‘I can't believe it, I made this beautiful dinner for my husband for Valentine's Day, he called to say he was stuck in the office and then didn't come home at all. '" Abramowitz said for a person who is being unfaithful to a spouse, the day can create problems that lead to them finally getting caught. "The person who is cheating is caught in the middle; they have to satisfy the spouse and their lover, and more often than not that's an impossible feat (壮举) to achieve," he said.

Telecommuters fall into two camps. Some sit on the sofa watching daytime soaps, pausing occasionally to check their BlackBerrys. Most, however, do real work, undistracted by meetings and talkative colleagues.
In the future more people will work from home. With office space in London and New York so costly, many firms save money by encouraging staff to work in their pyjamas. Instead of having to bury their noses in strangers' armpits on crowded trains, they can work via e-mail, Skype and virtual private networks.
Yet, in research published in MIT Sloan Management Review, Daniel Cable of the London Business School shows that telecommuters are less likely to be promoted. In one experiment, subjects were asked to judge scenarios (场景) in which the only difference was whether the employee was at his office desk or at home. Managers rated those at the office to be more dependable and industrious, regardless of the quality of their work.
Visibility creates the illusion of value. Being the last to leave the office impresses bosses, even if you are actually larking around (胡闹) on Facebook. Oddly, this holds true at firms that explicitly encourage staff to work from home. Many Californian tech firms asked employees not to come to the office too often; yet bosses unconsciously penalised those who obeyed.
Remote workers understand this. Many frequently sent their bosses progress reports to prove they are on the job. A fifth of the workers in the study admitted to leaving an e-mail or voice mail early or late in the day. Still, many are not as smart as they think. Some choose a Monday or Friday to work at home. That, says Mr. Cable, makes others think they are keen to extend the weekend.
A culture of presenteeism (全勤主义) hurts working mothers most. Many women (and some men) work from home to allow themselves the flexibility to pick up kids from school. That need not mean they produce less; only that they do it at a time and a place of their own choosing. Some firms, such as Best Buy, an electronics retailer, recognise this and try hard to evaluate staff solely on performance. But this is not easy. Intangibles such as teamworking skills matter, too. Mr. Cable thinks homeworking will lose its stigma (耻辱) only when most people do it. Or perhaps when the boss is telecommuting, too.

Immigration is regarded by the public as the biggest issue facing British society, a major new survey taking stock of the state of the country reveals. One in three people believes tension between immigrants and people born in the UK is the major cause of division, while well over half regard it as one of the top three causes.
Over the past two decades, both immigration and emigration have increased to historically high levels, with those entering the country exceeding those leaving by more than 100 000 in every year since 1998. Yet the survey in a report by the think tank British Future also suggests the country is, at heart, tolerant of those who come to its shores. While one in four thinks being born here is important to being British, two-thirds of people believe the welfare state should be open to those born abroad who have contributed to society and play by the rules.
The poll results are being released as communities secretary Eric Pickles prepares to give a major speech in which he will announce further efforts to aid integration. Pickles will say that a mastery of English is the key to social mobility and essential if people of different generations want to get on. He will stress that a shared language is vital for our economy. And he will highlight it is as the key to uniting people and increasing their understanding of one another.
Sunder Katwala, director of British Future, said the survey highlighted a national anxiety about immigration to which national politicians needed to respond. However, he also noted that the results suggested that when people thought about their local areas, there was less concern. While 30% placed immigration first when thinking about tensions facing British society as a whole, only 19% chose it as the most divisive issue in their own area.
There was also very little correlation (关联) between the geographical distribution of immigrants and the levels of concern. Immigration was regarded as the most divisive issue for 19% of people in north-east England and 20% in Wales—where the 2011 census shows one in 20 people were born abroad—and for 20% of Londoners, where immigrants make up one in three of the population.
16

I spent Monday morning at a speed awareness course, whereas I had been dispatched for failing to notice a speed camera on the other side of a dual carriageway. It was an interesting opportunity for the examination of the emotional mechanisms underlying moral conduct. Driving a car is almost certainly the most dangerous thing that any of us do in our lives. Certainly, it's the most dangerous to other people. Even the ghastly (令人震惊的) Mexican drug wars (60 000 killed since 2006) are not more lethal than the traffic there, which kills about 17 000 people every year.
One interesting thing is that there was no attempt by our lecturers to make explicit the moral dimensions of what we had done. I'm not saying there should have been. It wouldn't have been effective. But the emphasis was entirely on self-interest and the unpleasant social and financial consequences of being caught again.
Related to this was the extraordinary lack of regret or even interest shown by some of the participants. I was sitting next to a man who ran a minicab company and consistently guessed that the speed limits on various classes of roads were anything up to 20mph lower than they actually are. This did not mean that he drove at 20mph below the limit, only that he assumed that he was speeding all the time and everywhere.
The only time there was an outbreak of moral outrage was when one of our members confessed that he sometimes rode a bicycle. Cyclists, we rapidly learned, were vile, dangerous outlaws who shot red lights, paid no tax, rode on the pavement and behaved with utter disregard for the safety of anyone else on the road. While this noise was going on, I had a small epiphany (顿悟). The cyclists were hated because they are cheats. They are getting away with something that car drivers cannot.
Especially in London traffic, the cyclist appears as a figure high above all laws and duns. The motorist is born free, but everywhere he is in queues. The courier burning through a red light, even the quiet law-abiding cyclist like me who only rides very slowly through red lights, demonstrates the freedom that car drivers have traded for comfort.
